Undoubtedly, you are the king/queen of your bed. You call all the shots, including getting inside the covers with or without clothes. However, sleeping naked is catching the fancy of many people, especially since its benefits are coming to light.

Should you sleep naked? We strongly recommend so. While more scientific research and evidence are needed on the benefits of sleeping nude, its potential benefits and perks are too good to ignore. Here, we offer a glimpse of why sleeping naked is better for your health. Read on!

1. Fall Asleep Faster

Our body’s sleep/wake cycle is regulated by its circadian rhythm, which is again ruled by your body’s thermostat and the bedroom environment. Cooling down your body temperature is a cue for your body to sleep. For the same, you are likely to experience sleep disruption on feeling hot.

Sleeping naked naturally lowers your body temperature and helps you fall asleep faster.

2. Keeps Skin Healthy

Do you know that skin cells go into recovery mode while you sleep? At night your sleep helps in regenerating new skin cells and cycling oxygen and nutrients. Because sleeping naked induces more restful and deep sleep, it also improves your skin quality and health by helping in the regeneration process.

Your sleep quality has a direct impact on your skin. Improper sleep and sleep deficiency causes wrinkles, drooping skin, swelling of eyes, dark under-eye circles, etc. Moreover, it also delays the healing of wounds like cuts, blisters, etc. So sleeping naked and getting a more peaceful sleep can help here as well.

3. Better Sleep Quality

Our bodies naturally lower the core temperature at night to induce sleep. And when we sleep naked, it helps our body remain even cooler and maintain lower temperatures. As a result, it helps us sleep long and without disruption, improving overall sleep quality.

4. Reduce Stress and Anxiety

It’s common knowledge that stress and anxiety can trigger insomnia. Studies also indicate that sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality can lead to depression and increased suicide risks.

Better sleep quality is an excellent tool to combat these mental issues attained by sleeping naked.

5. Prevents Weight Gain

Did you know that inadequate sleep and weight gain are also correlated? Several studies have been undertaken on it.

According to a 2020 analysis, the risk of obesity and higher body mass index (BMI) increased by a whopping 41% in adults who slept less than 7 hours per night. Simultaneously, the risk was not present in adults who slept longer.

Sleep deprivation makes us hungrier and increases the craving for sugary and fat foods that lead to obesity.

Sleeping naked helps you get full sleep that helps curtail weight gain.

6. Lower Risk of Heart Disease & Type 2 Diabetes

A study of 1,455 people conducted in 2010 indicated that inadequate sleep increased your risk of diabetes and heart diseases.

Because sleeping naked promotes better and more restful sleep, it helps in lowering the risk of diabetes and other heart diseases.

7. Promote Vaginal Health

We all know tight-fitting and sweaty underwear can make ladies more vulnerable to vaginal yeast infections. It is because yeast thrives in warm, moist places.

If you tend to sweat more or wake up several times during the night, try sleeping in your birthday suit or extra-large underwear. A woman sleeping naked is bound to find her vaginal health elevating effortlessly.

8. Increase Male Fertility

A naked guy sleeping will also enjoy the benefits of sleeping naked and more. According to a recent study, wearing tight-fitted underwear lowered the sperm count. Wearing boxers or sleeping naked is an excellent way to keep the sperm concentration higher and healthier by maintaining optimal temperature and keeping the testicles cool.

9. Boost Self-Esteem

A study also indicated that sleeping naked can boost your self-esteem and self-confidence. It enhances your body image, life satisfaction, and self-esteem. It also increases happiness, sexual functioning, and improved well-being.

10. Improve Your Relationship

Even if you are not indulging in sexual activity, sleeping naked with your partner can also do wonders to improve your relationship.

According to a study released by the Frontiers in Psychology, skin-on-skin contact between adults produced more oxytocin than clothed cuddling. It also made you more open to sexual activity.

All this leads to overall happiness and a better relationship with your partner.

Things To Consider Before Sleeping Naked

How to sleep naked is nothing short of an art, and you must adhere to a few considerations. We list them for a more comfortable and hygienic sleep in the buff.

  • Change your bed sheets more frequently for a healthy bed. However, it implies stocking more bed sheet sets than your regular supply.
  • Keep soft and comfortable bedding handy to use in bed to prevent any coldness from creeping in.
  • It’s best to shower before bed. It would keep things healthy and hygienic and keep your sheets cleaner for a longer time.
  • If you share your room with a roommate or have family that can catch you unawares, you can wear loose underwear or boxers or even extra loose clothes. It would almost render similar benefits. It becomes a must if you sleepwalk.

Tips To Start Sleeping Naked

Switching to sleeping in the buff can be mentally daunting if you are used to sleeping in clothes. We share some helpful tips that would help you make the transition from sleeping in clothes to naked easy.

  • Start with shedding one clothing and sleeping until you graduate to complete nudity. If comfortable, you can start by sleeping in just underwear or one t-shirt for a few nights.
  • Create a comfortable pace of shedding clothes, so you do not feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.
  • Let your partner know about the change in your sleep routine and encourage them to join you on the bandwagon.
  • Buy better quality bedding and sheets to feel soft and comfortable against the skin.
  • Always keep a comforter or blankets handy to keep you warm at night in case you feel cold.
  • Create a bedtime ritual to relax you completely and cool your body before you strip your clothing for sleep.
  • Maintain a comfortable and ideal room temperature between 60 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. It would keep you comfortable throughout the night.

The Cons of Sleeping Naked

Sleeping naked also comes with its drawbacks. A few of them are:

1. Increase Bacteria in Bed

Sleeping naked might raise some hygiene issues. For instance, most of us pass gas during sleep. While passing gas, you also excrete a small amount of faecal matter that is arrested by your underwear.

Without clothes, your body’s sweat, faeces, and other grime would pass straight to the sheets and facilitate bacterial growth.

You can maintain proper hygiene by changing the bedsheets more frequently and preferably daily.

2. Increase Your Chances of an Allergic Reaction

Your bedding and mattress are naturally susceptible to various allergens like dust, mites, mould, mildew, pet dander, etc. Along with bacterial growth on the bed, you will invite a higher risk of an allergic reaction, especially if you are more sensitive to allergens. Hence, you must take extra precautions.

3. Risk Sleeping Cold

You need to be cool and not cold for more restful sleep. Sometimes, your body temperature might get too low when sleeping nude. It can weaken your immunity and make you more vulnerable to falling sick.

Furthermore, viruses and other disease-causing agents can become more active in a cold ambience. It can be risky. Hence, you need to ensure that you are cool but not getting cold while sleeping naked. Using a comforter, blanket, etc., can be an excellent way to eliminate the risk of getting cold.

What If I Can’t Sleep Naked?

Sometimes you might have too many people in your house or do not have a private room. You could be sharing it with another roommate. Sleeping naked would not be feasible under those circumstances.

In those scenarios, you can opt for loose and comfortable sleepwear crafted of natural fibres like wool, silk, cotton, etc. Most of them allow proper ventilation to keep you cool and comfortable without trapping body moisture or heat.

The trick is to dress minimally and comfortably.

Conclusion

Getting good quality and adequate sleep is the key to good health. Sleeping naked is one good way to achieve it, even though more scientific research is needed to establish the truth. However, it has its pleasures that can be enjoyed for a healthier mind and body.
