How-To-Measure-Bed-Size

When it comes to bringing home the right bed size, measuring it can help as you will be able to understand if it fits the room you want seamlessly. Measuring a bed also lets you figure out if the length and the width will keep you comfortable. For instance, your bed size must be at least four inches longer than the tallest sleeper. But how to measure bed size? Should you consider the outline or the inner section of a bed? Well, we are here to clear all your doubts and let you know how to measure your bed effortlessly.

What Are the Different Bed Sizes Available?

Look at all the standard bed sizes available in the market today. We will also walk you through their dimensions to make it easier for you!

Single

Also known as a twin bed, a single measures 36 inches in width, and you can choose between 72, 75, and 78 inches in length. It is the smallest size available in the market and is usually suitable for children and teenagers. However, a twin can be used by a petite single adult if you have space constraints. It is also an excellent fit for guest rooms! The minimum room size for a single bed is 7 feet by 9 feet.

Double

Also known as a full bed, a double bed is a step above a single. It measures 48 inches in width, and the length comes in three options- 72, 75, and 78 inches. A double bed is perfect for single adults and teenagers. It may be a little too congested for couples. However, if you are a couple who loves sleeping cuddled, it can be perfect for you! Here, the room size must be a minimum of 7 feet by 10 feet.

Queen

The Queen mattress is the most popular mattress today because it is perfect for adults and single adults. The dimensions of queen size bed are 60 inches in width by 72/75/78 inches in length. One of the main advantages of a queen bed is that it gives you some extra room to move around. For a queen, the room size must be at least 9.6 feet by 10 feet.

King

A king mattress is the biggest standard mattress size in the market today. The king-size bed dimensions are 72 inches wide by 72/75/78 inches long and are perfect for couples or parents who want to co-sleep with their child. You can even easily accommodate your pet too! For a king, the room’s dimensions must be at least 12 feet by 12 feet.

How to Measure Your Bed Size?

Let’s now delve deeper into how to measure your bed size. It is a super easy process. Just follow these below-mentioned steps, and you are good to go.

  • Strip the bed of all bedding: Step number one is to remove all the bedding from your bed so you can jot down the exact measurements because you will have to measure the bed from the edge.
  • Grab a retractable measuring tape: Now, use the retractable measuring tape to take the measurements, as it will hold it in place. It is commonly used in construction, but most at-home tool kits will have them.
  • Place one end of the measuring tape at the left side of the bed: Now, place the measuring tape at the edge of the left side and pull it out until it reaches the right side border. It is the width of the bed.
  • Set the end of the tape at the middle top of the bed: Finally, to get the length of the bed, make sure you place the tape at the middle top of the bed and pull it down to the complete bottom of the bed and note down the measurements.

Which Bed Size Is The Best For Me?

Now that you are done with the measurements, you must next figure out the right fit for you. To ensure you end up with the right bed size, take a look at the tips below.

Who Will Sleep In the Bed

Consider all the sleepers. Will you be sharing the bed with your partner? Do you have a pet who would want to snuggle? Maybe you are planning to co-sleep with your child. So, considering this, you can narrow down the standard mattress sizes for you. For instance, if you share the bed with your partner, a single and double bed are out of the race because they are small and can feel congested.

Your Room Size

If you opt for a large bed and your room doesn’t have enough space, it can feel claustrophobic. So, the thumb rule is to leave three inches gap on three sides of the bed to ensure there is room to move around. Now, let’s continue with the above example. Let’s say you and your partner will share the bed, so a queen or a king can be the ideal choice. However, if you have a smaller room, a queen is what you can go with.

Your Body Size

Your body size and the way you sleep can be deciding factors too. For instance, let’s say you are a little on the heavier side or tend to toss, then a single bed will feel uncomfortable, and you may need either a full or a queen bed.

Your Budget

Finally, the amount you want to spend on the bed plays a vital role. A king is the most expensive choice of the lot, whereas a queen will cost you more when compared to a double or a single. For instance, if you are a couple who is on a budget, a queen can be an ideal choice.

Conclusion

Sometimes, choosing a mattress can be quite confusing. But once you understand your requirements, it becomes easier to choose the right one!
